Materials Science has evolved from several disciplines, such as metallurgy, chemistry and mechanics to become a fully-fledged, interdisciplinary field. After a period of strong growth both in terms of volume of activity and increased knowledge, the field has now entered a quieter period. Nevertheless, although many concepts are clearly established, the complexity of the problems means that we are still far from complete control and moreover, in a highly industrialized world relying on many technologies, material needs are still present. SCIENCES is an up-to-date presentation of the basic concepts, including use properties, durability, lifecycle and recycling aspects. The purpose of the titles is to help bridge the skills gap in materials-using industries and to provide a foundation of skills for university and school-based training.
